Ziyarat in Makkah & Madinah

The historic places most pilgrims visit, and how to plan your Ziyarat day.

Updated October 2026 · MEM Travel & Tours

Ziyarat means visiting places linked to the life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and early Islamic history. It is not part of Umrah, but most pilgrims set aside half a day in each city. A guided tour by car or coach covers the main places in 3 to 4 hours.

Ziyarat in Makkah

  • Jabal al-Noor and the Cave of Hira: where the first verses of the Qur'an were revealed. The climb takes about an hour each way; many pilgrims view it from below.
  • Jabal Thawr: the mountain where the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr (RA) sheltered during the Hijrah to Madinah.
  • Mina: the valley of tents where pilgrims stay during Hajj, and the Jamarat.
  • Muzdalifah: where Hajj pilgrims spend the night after Arafat.
  • Arafat and Jabal ar-Rahmah: the plain where pilgrims stand on the Day of Arafah, the most important day of Hajj.
  • Masjid Aisha (Taneem): the nearest place to put on Ihram if you want to perform another Umrah from Makkah.

Ziyarat in Madinah

  • Masjid Quba: the first mosque built in Islam. Praying two rak'ahs here carries the reward of an Umrah, according to the hadith.
  • Mount Uhud and the martyrs' cemetery: the site of the Battle of Uhud, where Hamzah (RA) is buried.
  • Masjid al-Qiblatayn: where the direction of prayer changed from Jerusalem to the Ka'bah.
  • The Seven Mosques (Sab'a Masajid): near the site of the Battle of the Trench (Khandaq).
  • Jannat al-Baqi: the cemetery next to Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, where many companions and family members of the Prophet ﷺ are buried.
  • Riyad al-Jannah (Rawdah): inside Al-Masjid an-Nabawi. Book your time slot in the Nusuk app.

Tips for your Ziyarat day

  • Go early in the morning after Fajr, before the heat.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and carry water.
  • A guided tour with a driver who knows the places saves time and explains the history.
  • Respect local guidance: visit to learn and pray for the deceased, without practices that are not from the Sunnah.

We arrange Ziyarat tours by car or coach in both cities. Add Ziyarat when you build your Umrah package, or see our services.
